What if people could feel confident communicating what they are really thinking without fearing a negative response from their colleagues or boss? Consulting with a diversity of organizations for the past decade, the authors have seen time and again that leaders are failing to draw out ideas and perspectives from their introverts and, at the same time, shutting up their extroverts. Inhibitors in organizations make candid communication unsafe, rendering many things left unsaid.

Permission to Speak Freely explains the inhibitors that cause candid communication to feel unsafe and then provides tools to help leaders overcome them and begin to cultivate a culture of candor. This book is a letter to leaders - filled with experience, research, and practicality - that implores all persons in positions of power to create a work environment characterized by honesty and trust that inspires everyone to share fearlessly, speak freely, and come forward with new ideas.

Research shows candid communication enhances innovation, ownership, engagement, and performance. Put simply, if you're a leader, when your people don't speak up, it's not their problem - it's yours.

I used this book for my leadership class. I really enjoyed reading this book because it was very interesting, I enjoyed the little stories that were in the book.
Another great book by this dynamic duo. This book is chock-full of positive and inspirational stories that emerging leaders can relate to and apply to their own leadership skill set. A must-read for up-and-coming leaders in any field.
Wonderful! The chapters don't feel too heavy in wording, but enough to prove a point in each one. I feel more confident in speaking up more, because of my introverted personality. I did share the book to my family, and they enjoyed it. Please buy this worthy investment....i did and you will see what this can do to have more of a candor environment.
The authors explain, using personal insights, work-based examples, and research, how communication barriers between leaders and their teams can be lowered or eliminated by using some simple strategies, applied consistently, particularly by leaders. I work in higher education, and the ideas and methods provided in this book will be quite helpful in our setting. I just saw three of the principles presented in the book used this morning at a leaders meeting, with good effect. Thanks for a good book!
I absolutely loved this book and everything the authors talked about. If you are someone who oversees other people in any kind of environment I definitely recommend you to read through this book. The book does speak to work types of settings, but I found myself applying a lot of the information to my life outside of work and the roles I play as daughter, sister, and a friend. This book definitely got me thinking about the culture I’m cultivating in my life in general.
Good examples in the book. Lot of great things to take from it and apply to any organization. Fast read and easy to apply concepts that anyone can utilize today.

Only thing I can knock it for (and not give a full 5 stars) is the fact that the chapters seemed to all conclude the same thing, "create a culture of candor." While this makes good overriding theme, I think the chapters should of had their own specific conclusions about leadership. But that's not a huge bad mark.

Read this book!!!
Permission to Speak Freely is positively affecting the way I lead on a daily basis. The book is engaging and not just a regurgitation of other leadership books out on the market today. Matt and Doug cohesively build a narrative that encourages you to create the space for your team members to express themselves and contribute to pushing your company forward. They do a great job of blending a range of scholarly studies and stories from world class leaders and organizations mixed with a bit of personal experiences to bring it all home.

As a side note, the Leader term directly applies to you regardless of whether you are directly leading a team at work today. If you aspire to lead a team this will help you better identify the leaders in your company that have the attributes should be emulating and learning from. This book has also given me much to reflect upon in my other roles as parent, spouse, and friend where learning to listen and accept direct feedback is so critical.
